Dexter: Original Sin – Season One [2024] on Paramount Plus

Dexter: Original Sin was a pleasant surprise. I really wanted to hate it, but Patrick Gibson won me over within the first five minutes.

This show was announced right after the lukewarm reception of Dexter: New Blood, as a prequel to the original show. Sounds confusing. It was, considering that they also announced a sequel to New Blood right at the same time. It really felt like it was going to be a failed money grab attempt from Showtime.

Fast forward to the finale of the first season and I’m happy to report: It’s not! Original Sin grabs the attention from beginning to end. Yes, it plays on the 90s nostaliga, and on the emotions of the fans of the original show, but it also adds to it many many layers. Christian Slater & Molly Brown are perfect casting as Harry and Deborah Morgan, Dexter’s “family”.

In fact, something about the Dexter story works time and time again: PTSD, trauma, crime and vigilante. It’s all there. Yes, we already know where the story is going, but to be honest, Gibson makes it too much fun to watch while listening to Michael C. Hall, the original Dextr, as his inner voice.

Can’t wait for a second, and hopefully a third, season!

Should You Watch It?

It’s entertaining, even if it leans heavily on fan service early on. There are no surprises or revelations here, just the comfort of the familiar, with a bloody twist in Patrick Dempsey‘s character.
