Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair doesn’t feel like a reboot or a nostalgia play. It is, but it’s very well done that it doesn’t feel like one.
All our favorite mischiefs are back! Centered around Frankie Muniz as Malcom, creator Linwood Boomer managed to do the impossible. Make a beloved show grow up with its viewers. Yes, the shenanigans are still at the core of this show, but they actually grew up with their characters. And few revivals managed to do that.
This almost 2-hour long show observes how the characters navigate with its legacy, without offering conclusive resolutions. The result is a return that doesn’t seek to restore the past, but rather to examine it from the present.
While fans of the original show might want a longer “season”, I’m happy that it’s the perfect size. Not forced like the Scrubs revival that feels weird. Life’s Still Unfair feels more organic than any other revivals I’ve seen in the past decade. It sets the benchmark for how to execute the notoriously difficult reboot, and feels like it was written with impenetrable love for both the characters and its fans.
You may well find yourself getting a little misty-eyed right when it’s time to say goodbye again. Talk about unfair.
Should You Watch It?
All the same heart, humor, and wacky situations that made you love the original, but grown up. I wouldn’t mind another 4 episodes season to be honest.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on Disney+ everywhere.
