Murderbot - Season One [2025] on Apple TV Plus

Murderbot is a breezy workplace comedy. It’s a very fun watch anchored by Alexander Skarsgård’s stellar performance.

Based on Martha Wells’ ‘The Murderbot Diaries’, this show is a thrilling, heartwarming, and deeply irreverent look at what makes us human and how we can all better connect with each other buried underneath an absurdist sci-fi comedy. Honestly, I found myself in some of Skarsgård’s inner monologue as the murder bot while he was clearly watching a spoof of Star Trek.

It’s a decidedly silly show, but one in which Skarsgard, who so brilliantly plays sociopathic men, portrays a disdainful but soft-eyed killing machine with a lot of anxious “humanity.” It’s a great departure from his typical roles while staying true to his career path.

The show’s take on the gulf between humans and machines is a delightful departure from expectations often outlined by similar stories about AI. In fact, an AI like Murderbot may indeed become autonomous one day, we would be very like if it turns out like Skarsgård’s character.

Yes, this first season is a bit thin in story and plot, despite its 10 episodes run. But i can’t complain. It was a breeze to watch and very deep at the same time. There are rich existential questions — about identity, self-will and what it means to be human — buried deep in its premise. Its dry humour and emotional beats will leave you hanging in every episode.
