North of North - Season One [2025] on CBC Gem / Netflix

North of North is not what I expected it to be. It’s way better. An indigenous comedy with real world problems that also doesn’t feel preachy.

When was the last time you heard of, let along saw, a show about a young Inuk woman wants to build a new future for herself after some life changes?

Starring Anna Lambe, Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke and others, North Of North is a cozy sweetheart show with lots going for it. Figuring out yourself, proudly embracing the indigenous culture, adressing some of the colonial issues in Canada head’s on and their effect on indigenous folks, and other important issues.

Yes, those are some heavy subjects to be discussed in a comedy show in Canada, but creator and writer Stacey Aglok MacDonald manages to normalize having those conversations and trying to heal from them. Plus, it helps to have Anna Lambe as your star.

Lambe gives a wonderfully charismatic performance as Siaja. While her character is trying to figure out their place in their remote society, she tries her best to reconcile with her mom, and make her remote town better. She stumbles a bit, but don’t we all?

This is a show about love, community, and belonging that will bring people together. It’s the antidote we didn’t know we needed, a brief, joyful respite not just from the grim news cycle but also from the intensity of most streaming TV. Can’t wait to see more of it. Keep it going CBC!
