Review: The Boys – Season Four [2024] on Prime Video

The Boys - Season Four - Prime Video Canada June 2024

Season four of Prime Video’s The Boys is a clear example of a show running out of steam. Fun, unhinged, but going nowhere.

As far as I’m concerned, the franchise flatlined with the third season that was over-engineered to create dull spin-offs. However, just because I love over the top shows, I gave this season a chance. And I have to say, it’s half half.

The season starts slow. VERY Slow. First half is stuck on repeat, following past plotlines. Thankfully, the second half picks up momentum and leaves you salivating for the final episode, which doesn’t deliver. I know, shocker for an over the top franchise that is known for not holding-off. Thing is, even when it goes wilder than ever before, It isn’t enough to distract from the formulaic approach the show is taking. The Boys used to make fun of Marvel Studios and DC. It became one of them.

Finally, the show may still have some cracks, but the season coasts off its likeable characters and the promise of an explosive final season! Hopefully it’s not as disappointing as the last 2 seasons, and the spin-off. The upcoming fifth and final season of needs an injection of something fresh to revitalise proceedings and tie all the different story threads together.

Should you watch it?

If there’s any consistent thread in The Boys, it’s that whatever explanation of what’s going on — whether it be the obvious one, the absurd one, or something else entirely — hinges on the world these characters live in being irredeemably stupid. Good season with disappointing and expected finale.

Where can I watch it?

You can stream all seasons of The Boys exclusively on Prime Video.
