Slow Horses – Season Four [2024] on Apple TV+

Slow Horses - Season Four [2024] on Apple TV+

After three amazing seasons, Slow Horses is finally getting slower. But still as good if not better thanks to that special twist.

With another satisfying yet curiously gut-wrenching season, this anti-spy satire bares teeth and transforms into a uniquely thoughtful and well-rounded beast in a sea of boilerplate drama thrillers.

There’s nothing typical about this show, and this season proves that. Each episode, you’re wonder what the heck is going on (in a good way). The first half of the season is a mystery box. The second half is a continuously unravelling twists and turns that will get you even more engaged.

Gary Oldman has less scenes this season, but his presence is felt more than ever. When he shows up, he swings big and wins bigger. He makes it clear: This remains his show first and last, but everyone has a chance to shine. All of them.

Even when things are slow, the show continues to be ludicrously implausible, and I wish Lamb and Diana would verbally spar more often (it’s so rare it feels like script rationing), but it’s still got the touch. Slow Horses is thrilling, often improbably so. Especially this season. But it’s also keenly attuned to the dynamics and psychology of the trade — what it means to understand people as expendable pieces in an unwinnable game.

All in all, yes, I would have loved a more “active” season, but the show is still utterly brilliant. Can’t wait for what they bring in their fifth season later this year!

Should You Watch It?

Four seasons in, and a fifth on the way, Slow Horses remains a thing of beauty. It’s hard to look away from a series that feels so lived-in, so utterly convinced of its own grimy brilliance.
