The Four Seasons takes an easy premise that could have been amazing, and mellows the heck out of it. I want more substance, and less fillers for the next season.
Three couples, four vacations, what could go wrong? Well, according to this show created by Tina Fey, a lot can, and somehow, at the same time, it will be boring.
Starring Fey, as well as Colman Domingo, Steve Carell, and others, The Four Seaons takes a great setup, and does nothing with it. Three middle aged couples, with real life problems, going on vacations together. And even though a lot happens, like one of them breaking their marriage, and the other having heart sugery, the show just sails through those like it’s no big deal. Are they really friends if something like that is not a big deal?
Domingo is great as a middle aged gay man with an overcaring husband. If anything, he should be the center of the second season. However, for some reason, we focus on Carell’s problems here, and Fey’s. Don’t get me wrong, both of their characters have a lot of those problems, but even though they’re serious, it just doesn’t feel like it is. Or even interesting.
The show just paddles in without ever diving truly, madly, deeply into the troubles bedevilling these charm-free chumps. And that’s sad.
Should you watch it?
Is it cute? Yes. But without enough drama, or jokes, the unenergetic drama is stretched thin across eight episodes.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream The Four Seasons exclusively on Netflix everywhere.
