The fifth season of Only Murders in the Building proves that, even though it repeats the formula, its story doesn’t lose any of its freshness or humor.
After stellar third and fourth seasons, it was hard to keep the momentum going, and it shows. In this season, our favorite podcast trio are investigating the murder of their doorman right after the wedding.
While the first four seasons could have been considered ‘realistic’, this season throws all of that out of the window and becomes pure fantasy. The series likely will never reach the heights of the Broadway-set Season 3, which introduced Streep to the main cast. This season, like last year’s Hollywood-set Season 4, operates more like comfort food.
From a doorman robot voiced by Paul Rudd, to a secret parlor and, what used to be regular characters, suddenly drop in and out without any reason or explanation…the cracks are starting to show. The threat this season poses is that the evil rich — here, the mob and the sinister billionaires — might take the Arconia over. The most appealing part of that story is the fantasy that they haven’t already done so.
Could it be better? Sure. But sometimes, good enough will do.
Should You Watch It?
While not their best season, this show keeps delivering high level comedy, with lots of zingers. Can’t wait for next season!
