Deadpool & Wolverine [2024] - Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin

Deadpool & Wolverine takes the fourth wall breaking and the fan servicing to a whole other level. It also spends most of its budget on talent instead of sets and VFX.

To be honest, I’m actually surprised that Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy managed to keep that many cameos a secret. #NoSpoilers.

Deadpool & Wolverine is an extremely fun and crazy movie where the two titular characters go on a ride to the void with tons of cameos, meta jokes, and jabs and both Fox and Disney. However, it’s not a perfect movie. Hats off to Emma Corin for what’s probably the most well rounded and scarriest MCU villain in years.

As a Marvel fan, and looking back at what I saw, almost 24 hours laters, I’m not sure what I saw. The two characters spend over two hours going into literral nowhere, stab each other repeadlty with no reasoning, and end up back to where we started. The only difference? Deadpool is now in the same universe with a living Wolverine.

Don’t get me wrong. I really enjoyed watching the movie. But fun time aside, what exactly happens? What are the emotional stakes? I’m not really sure. As a sequel, the movie fails to setup Pool’s emotional stakes. In the first one, he wanted to be with Vanessa. In the second, he’s trying to save here. We finish the second on a high note with XForce and Vanessa saved. We start this one being told that they broke up, Pool has no purpose, and he jumped universes in the past to join *****. Really? That came out of nowhere.

Aside from the personal story, this movie is clearly aimed at die hard fans. Yes, some might watch it just because it’s Deadpool, others just for Xmen and Wolverine, but most of its jokes will fly waaaay over the audience’s head unless they fanatically follow Marvel news in the last 30 years. Yes. I’m going back all the way to 1998. #NoSpoilers.

However, if you look at the movie as Pool, the fourth wall breaking merk with the mouth, it’s a perfect movie. Killing off the Fox Xmen movies, and all the previous non-Marvel Studios franchises. In addition, moving Wolverine to the same universe as Deadpool gives them a bigger box to play with. In a sense, the road to Secret Wars has just started with heroes from multiple franchises fighting in a patch work universe for their survival. I just wished, as a farewell letter to specifically the Xmen movies, to get more relevant cameos insteaf of the Last Stand rejects.

Should You Watch It?

This is an entertaining love letter to – and light funeral service for -20th Century Fox’s Marvel movies. It’s a lot of fun, and a great way to say goodbye to beloved characters even if they weren’t invited for this one. Even Marvel Studios has a limited budget. While the plot won’t really stick with you, the fight sequences paired with one of the best soundtracks will.

Where Can I Watch It?

Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
