Elemental is another movie from Pixar where we’re taken through all the emotions. Give it a chance, it might end up being your favorite Pixar movie.
It’s refreshing to see the studio modernizing its stories. From Luca to Turning Red, Pixar is really trying to differentiate itself from the main Disney Animation studio productions. And it’s showing.
No more “princesses looking for their prince”. Instead, what we have here is a story about two people from completely different worlds falling in love & trying to break their own prejudices. Add to it an immigrant story, a powerful female character, and what you get is a timeless movie that a lot of people will feel represented by.
In addition, we all know the LGBTQ representation issues with Disney & Pixar in the last couple of years. I was surprised that director Peter Sohn snuck 2 characters there. A scene with the mom, and a couple in the background. As an LGBTQ immigrant to Canada, I felt seen, in a clever way. Not all representation needs to be forced, or “look over here”. I’m personally happier when it feels natural and blends in with the movie.
Loved Elemental, and I’ll definitely be watching it again.
