While Jack Ryan: Ghost War is clearly made for tv, I’m still not sure why it’s made, besides product placement.
While the four season of the tv series were light on essence, heavy on crime, spy and action, the film is none of that. It’s light on everything, except product placement by Dubai companies.
Thing is, I love John Krasinski. The weird thing, while he executive produced and co-wrote the screenplay, he doesn’t seem to have been very interested in character development or meaningful dialogue. Instead, looking back at the film, it feels like the only reason it even exists, is that someone got DAMAC properties and Tourism Dubai to fund the whole thing, in exchange for having a Die-Hard clone filmed there.
Instead of actually being an extension of the series, it’s a passive movie that plays more like a commercial advertising Dubai, and not the series that spawned it, instead of a natural continuation of storylines. Everyone working on it forgot everything that happened, and decided to “surprise” us by a film that makes no sense, has no reason to exist, and without any story except “here’s a tower in Dubai”
This is becoming another franchise that Amazon is using to funnel people back to its marketplace, instead of producing watchable popcorn movies. It’s not worth it.
Should You Watch It?
A risible film that undermines almost everything that worked about the streaming series. Skip it even if you love the series.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Jack Ryan: Ghost War on Prime Video.
