Film: Materialists [2025] – Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal

Materialists won’t win you over by every choice, especially by its female lead casting. However, I was glad to have gone through the journey.

Starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, & Pedro Pascal, the movie is a romantic drama with a very real look at the reality of dating in our modern age. The good, the bad, and the extremely dark and ugly.

While Pascal is his usual charming self, Evans delivers his finest work to date, revealing an emotional depth and vulnerability that’s rarely surfaced in his uneven career. The main issue? Casting Johnson at the center of the movie. Everyone had chemistry with everyone in the movie, even when they weren’t sharing scenes. And Johnson felt like a frozen cardboard with the same performance and voice from Madame Web (Yes, that movie was bad on its own, but she didn’t help).

Casting aside, I really enjoyed the movie, even when I was bored by some scenes. Not your typical romcom, and that’s a good thing. However, it could be tighter. A lot of scenes just dragged five to ten seconds longer than they should. And it made us, the viewers, feel a bit dragged down by it.

In fact, I was losing patience in the movie until the last scene. Even though I’m not a fan of why we got there, I appreciated it. This romantic drama is little cynical, a little hopeful, and wholly reflective of the way we live and love in today’s world.

Should You Watch It?

Materialists is a sharp, sincere, germane and poignant examination of modern romance in the materialistic world we live in. Dating may be hard, but the right kind of love will feel easy, even if it’s a little messy.
