Mayday itself needs a lot of saving. Light comedy that has absolutely no reason to exist, besides someone making money.
As much as I love Ryan Reynolds, he’s clearly becoming a one note actor. That might be a bad thing, but he’s clearly smart enough to monetize it in multiple projects.
While Mayday presents itself as a classic buddy movie, the difference is they’re being chased by the KGB. Yes, the buddy aspect between Kenneth Branagh & Reynolds holds up well, the action is well-paced, and there are a few quiet moments, but they serve the overall story.
However, that’s where all the “good things” I have to say about this film end. Twenty minutes too long, the film is a mixture of Top Gun, Deadpool & Wolverine, and every other Reynolds film in the past 15 years. There’s absolutely nothing new here. Even the jokes, they’re recycled.
The only reason I decided to watch the film, is the fact that it was free on Apple TV. And even then, I kind of regret wasting part of my Sunday. Did I enjoy it? Some scenes. Would I watch it ever again? Not at all.
Should You Watch It?
Mayday answers the question of: What If Deadpool, and every other Reynolds film, was a Top Gun spinoff. Decent movie, but it’s exhausting to watch the same character all over again.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Mayday exclusively on Apple TV.
