This Superman reboot works thanks to stellar performances by David Corenswet & Nicholas Hoult. Overstuffed, with a lot of heart.
DC Studios’ Superman is James Gunn‘s first feature project as the head of the studio, and his first project since Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Sorry, I don’t count Peacemaker. A lot was riding on this movie, from the reboot of the DC Universe, to the financial viability of Warner Bros itself. Thankfully, Gunn delivers a super start with a movie that is up there. It’s not the best Superman, but it’s good!
To be honest, I had no idea who Corenswet was. I knew Rachel Brosnahan from Ms. Maisel and Hoult from his previous roles. As a result, I wasn’t sure what to expect from our new superhero. And that was a good thing. He fills and fits the role and some. It’s like he’s always been the man of steel. And that’s magic.
Thankfully, we skip the origin story, and we go straight to the plot. Superman is fighting a monster sent by Lex Luthor (Hoult) and he’s not winning. No spoilers here.
If we put aside the overstuffed cast, which is only there because this is the movie to kick-off the new universe and they need to tie things together, the trio, and Gunn, delivered a fun and refreshing movie about humanity, hope and technology. It’s a bold, and fun first flight. However, I can’t help but feel it could have soared even higher if it had just lightened some of its load. The whole Justice Gang plot doesn’t move the story anywhere. You could have replaced all of it with just Mr Terrific and the movie would be essentially the same.
Should You Watch It?
James Gunn’s “Superman” is a lot of fun, but it lacks an emotional core worthy of its hero. Reminiscent of the first Guardians, the movie feels shackled by the weight of the nascent universe. It’s not bad. It’s good. Really good. It just could have been great.
Where Can I Watch It?
DC Studios’ Superman is now playing in theaters.
