Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire [2024] - Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire tries very hard to mix the old and the new while extending the universe. The result is an okay movie with lots of wasted potential.

After a surprisingly good movie with Afterlife, Sony is really trying to make this franchise happen. Sadly, it’s starting to give Madame Web vibes. The great new cast starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon is joined once again with the original members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson for another adventure.

However, instead of furthering the new story, this sequel spends over an hour treading waters. Absolutely nothing significant happens in the first hour. We spent the time jumping between story lines trying to throw crumbles all over the place. But, the last 25 minutes are full of ghostbusters magic.

To be honest, the movie feels like two ideas, and budgets, mashed into one. Someone at Sony got influenced by Marvel Studios and wanted a big CGI fight in the third act. However, they forgot that CGI is expensive and decided to spend the majority of the budget on it, which left truly little for the rest of the movie. As a result, we spent the first two acts in smaller rooms having pointless chats.

Should You Watch It?

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire resorts to jingling keys in front of viewers’ faces instead of honing its more vital elements. If this is what the Ghostbusters franchise, or any other franchise for that matter, has to do to stay relevant, then please don’t. Take a decade long break and do a reboot. I didn’t hate the movie, I just wish there was more thinking outside of the box.

Where Can I Watch It?

You can stream Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Crave Canada.
