The People We Hate at the Wedding is a movie that I was expecting to hate. Yet, somehow, I actually really enjoyed it!
So, what’s the secret? It’s all genuine fun. Although the movie succumbs to extreme cliché at a certain point, it magically finds a way to mix things up and lets better angels prevail by the end.
Starring the magical trio of Allison Janney, Ben Platt, Kristen Bell, The People We Hate at the Wedding (yes, it’s a long name) deserves some recognition for what it’s trying to do, while not being a cheap straight-to-streaming movie like Falling for Christmas. Or a boring movie that’s promoted with a heavy misdirection and focus on its star power like Ticket to Paradise.
In fact, there’s a certain authenticity here, with bickering siblings and nasty antics that feels true to real life. Families aren’t perfect, and this movie does capture that. The movie expertly balances over-the-top high jinks with the heart that comes with the imperfect but unconditional love of family.
I just wish that the characters were a bit more developed, and the comedy was a lot of present.
Should you watch it?
The movie has a brevity to it that makes the silliness and embarrassing antics pass by quickly, and it delivers a decent amount of chuckles and even some outright laughs.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream The People We Hate at the Wedding exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
