FX’s Grotesquerie – Season One [2024] on Hulu/Disney Plus

Grotesquerie - Season One [2024] on Hulu/Disney Plus

Grotesquerie is a new series from the mind of Ryan Murphy. It is as confusing as its main character’s confusion while it tries to mix religion with horror.

Starring Niecy Nash, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Micaela Diamond, the show combines a lot of elements of drama and horror, but ends up tonally confused.

I get that it’s technically a horror and thriller show with some religious elements. You know, end of the world and stuff like that, but you can’t switch halfway without confusing and pissing off viewers. Initially presented as a typical police drama, the series progresses into a sociopathic study of the macabre. It combines the darkness of religious-themed horror with gruesome content designed to both titillate and nauseate.

However, whether the mystery at the center of Grotesquerie is good or not, I continued the show because I was invested in watching Niecy Nash-Betts. I haven’t seen her giving a good performance in a while. And she completely held my attention. From the police detective to the alcoholic to the mentally ill. She owned this show.

But, I feel bad for Nash-Betts. In typical Ryan Murphy fashion, the show doesn’t stick its landing. I really really hoped to get a good finale. Instead, it makes absolutely no sense in the universe of the show.

Should You Watch It?

It is a stylish, smart thriller and procedural with a strong cast that makes up for all the flaws in the writing and direction. However, the sets and art direction are perfect and remind us of the early days of AHS.

Where Can I Watch It?

You can stream Grotesquerie on Hulu in USA and on Disney+ everywhere else.
