Slow Horses – Season One [2022] on Apple TV+

Slow Horses mixes black comedy with suspense very skillfully and if all the characters are stereotypes, that’s kind of the point.

Starring Gary Oldman & Jack Lowden, Slow Horses is a show that I kept postponing on my watchlist. I’m really tired of slow British spy series, or comedy shows that aren’t comedic. However, I was wrong.

Although the story doesn’t offer much innovation in the spy genre, it’s well-structured, features brilliantly crafted dialogues, and boasts an outstanding ensemble cast.

In fact, the show’s subversive take on Bond and Bourne tropes is further elevated by dark humor — mostly delivered by the frequently inappropriate and flatulent Oldman — as well as slick pacing and some engrossing plot seeds we can’t wait to watch more of. This is a series that, although it explores some of the usual clichés in these stories, does so with great efficiency and a sensitivity that invites the viewer to binge-watch its 8 half-hour episodes with a permanent smile on their lips.

The show consistently maintains its tension, while hitting its mark to make you laugh. Imagine 24 with an inferiority complex, or James Bond as an unloved Eeyore of the spy trade.

Should You Watch It?

By the time you have fallen for the plot and the world Slow Horses, you would have fallen for Gary Oldman as well. Or vice-versa. An excellent addition to the espionage genre.
