Four episodes into Monsters, I was still not sure why this show even exists other than Netflix’s need to keep spitting out content.
Starring Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Monsters is supposed to be the story of how and why the Menendez brothers killed their parents. However, unlike the first season of the show about Dahmer, this season lacks any perspective or point of view.
I am not old enough to remember the events unfolding on the news. However, while the Menendez brothers’ story is undeniably interesting, the show just lacks essence and flair. I really didn’t want to spend any time with the characters.
It’s obvious that the actors did their best with what they were given, and people will never agree whether or not there was a miscarriage of justice, but that shouldn’t result in a show that lacks any essence. While visually stunning, the writing lacks the emotional and narrative depth that would have made it great.
No, I’m not asking the show to take sides. It’s clear that it doesn’t want to. But shoving every single potential reason for the murder into around 7 hours of runtime doesn’t make a good show.
Should you watch it?
It’s a competently put-together mess of theories made in the worst possible taste. No perspective, no reasoning, flat script, and vilifying literally everyone. What’s the point?
Where can I watch it?
You can stream all seasons of Monsters – The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story exclusively on Netflix everywhere.
