Fosse/Verdon – Limited Series [2019] on Disney Plus

FX’s Fosse/Verdon is uplifted by amazing performances by its main cast, as well as its complex writing and characters.

Starring Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams as Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, the show does a brilliant job of showing the changing dynamics between this married couple through some really tense scenes and dialogues, played masterfully by Williams and Rockwell.

In fact, what I really liked about the show is how the showrunner Steven Levenson found new and creative ways to tell us the story of the couple behind a lot of the famous Broadway shows, as well as some of the film cult classics. From Chicago to Cabaret, from Sweet Charity to Liza with a Z, this imperfect couple is the one to thank for a lot.

However, despite stellar performances from its two lead actors, it never really breaks out of that established biopic framework. Are we here to focus on the drama? or the historical part? or both? Fosse/Verdon strikes a delicate balance that ditches all of that focus, in favor of making sure we understand that its titular characters are flawed human beings, and I loved that.

All in all, besides being a meaty drama about a lifelong love-hate affair between two people, this series does a wonderful job of explaining the creative process in all its magic and mystery.

Should You Watch It?

While the series has had its ups and downs, it presents the story of two great auteurs in an artistic, unique way, rather than playing everything as a simple, linear biopic.
