Mobland might not be a new idea, but the perfect execution makes it one of the top crime shows in the last two years.
Starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, Paddy Considine, Helen Mirren, the show slowly unravel like a huge conspiracy theory. At first, it looks like a simple show about two mob families clash in a war that threatens to topple empires and lives. However, not everything is how it looks.
MobLand doesn’t completely abandon archetypes, although it does manage to shake off its seriousness with humor and pose moral dilemmas as something beyond organized crime. Mirren, as Maeve, is an evil genius here. She’s the scorned wife mixed with a crime lord. She makes Vanessa from Daredevil look nice.
Aside from Mirren, the brilliance of Tom Hardy dominates the series, as he effortlessly cajoles and threatens without ever raising his voice, making for a riveting watch. He’s the calmest fixer in all of Britain, and Antwerp.
This isn’t a perfect crime drama…When the action hits, it’s explosive, but the show is more of a melodrama with hefty amounts of dark humor, emotional intensity, and methodical explorations of psychological depth. It is plentiful with head games, surprises, and bombshells.
This series is intense, gritty, and psychological. With some minor flaws. I came for Tom Hardy, stayed for Helen Mirren to be honest.
Should You Watch It?
To be honest, after watching a lot of thrillers that turned out boring by Paramount Plus lately, I was warry about getting into this one. I was proven wrong.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Mobland on Paramount+.
