The Diplomat - Season One [2023] on Netflix

The Diplomat is great pulpy espionage fun. Netflix found a treasure here with Keri Russell. I hope they treat her well.

Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell magically headline The Diplomat. The Americans meets West Wing meets some comedy. It’s not surprising that it’s a good show since it came from the minds of The West Wing writer Deborah Cahn.

Don’t get me wrong. Even with a great cast and great writing, a show can still go very wrong in this age of streaming. However, everything goes right for this one. The series doesn’t skimp on the thrills as it explores its complex characters through a major international crisis. Its political thriller elements combined with just the right dose of character relationships are enough to keep our interest.

From the one of the most fascinating and complex marriages ever presented in a series, to the twisty and explosive ending, the show kept on firing on all cylinders, and I loved it. However, as much as I missed Keri Russel on my screen, the season needed slightly more juice, or 1 less episode to make it perfect.

Now let’s watch season two!

The Diplomat – Season One – Official Trailer
Should you watch it?

Pleasantly surprised, The Diplomat reminds me of The Americans, but with a lighter tone and modernized to our current world events.

Where can I watch it?

You can stream The Diplomat exclusively on Netflix everywhere.
