With season three, The Diplomat establishes itself as the best political show currently on TV. Its stand-out acting, superior writing, tense action, and moments of comedy blend into a fresh take on a tried-and-true genre.
Keri Russell is back as the powerful ambassador to Britain, picking up after one of the best cliffhangers at the end of season two. More twists and turns, an even more unstable husband, and a boyfriend? It’s a smart season, except when it’s dumb.
Season 3 ups the dramatic ante, and with Janney and Whitford on board for the season, we’re excited about how Kate will manage working with the new administration. And managing she does. Performances aside, the show’s success owes much to its cliffhanger episode endings. There are a lot of them these days, but few can match this show for genuine rug-pullers.
Without any spoilers, this season goes beyond extending the pre-existing story and meaningfully alters the status quo. Paradoxically, shaking up The Diplomat also returns the series to its roots. Once again, creator and showrunner Debora Cahn squeezes the most salacious juice out of political intrigue and emotional fallout. The wit, power plays, and addictive drama don’t disappoint, even when it becomes too unrealistic.
The Diplomat remains on top, even if its primary protagonist lives in a constant state of crisis.
Should you watch it?
While the twists are starting to get too convoluted, the drama, action, and personal development stories are as good as ever. Can’t wait for the next season.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream The Diplomat exclusively on Netflix everywhere.
