Film: Splitsville [2025] – Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin

Splitsville was a weird surprise to watch. Weird drama comedy anchored by Dakota Johnson doing another generic performance.

Starring Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin, and Michael Angelo Covino, the film is brimming with sharp one-liners, clever callbacks, brilliantly cringey slapstick situations, and hilariously inventive sight gags… as it taps into very contemporary anxieties and fears about relationships and marriage.

This is a film about modern adult relationships wrapped in a dark comedy. The kind of good old-fashioned adult comedy we don’t see enough — delivering a confident commentary on the mess of modern sex and relationships. Unpredictable, unromantic and, most importantly, unbelievably funny.

However, my biggest complaint would be Johnson. Can we please stop casting her? Or at least stop allowing her to give the same exact performances but with just different outfits? From Madame Web and Materialists to Splitsville, it’s the same character. She really proves that some actors are one note.

While Splitsville can be daft and slapstick, it’s oddly grown-up about the subject matter, as well as the art of filmmaking itself. The situations these characters are chucked into are carefully selected and highlighted in a way everyone can understand.

Should you watch it?

The perfect movie to bridge the gap between romcom fans and romcom haters. It feels like a fresh take on the romcom genre while also incorporating elements of slapstick and screwball comedies. I just wish it wasn’t Dakota Johnson.
