Monster: The Ed Gein Story is a convoluted story and insluting story to just about everybody except Ed Gein himself.
Starring Charlie Hunnam, this is the third outing in a series focused around serial killers. Hunnam aside, this season is an alarming take on the true crime biopic, and one which throws everyone under the bus, from Gein’s victims to the filmmakers he allegedly inspired.
Watching this season can be an overwhelming experience, and many viewers will find it too difficult or disturbing. If you thought Dahmer was hard to watch, it’s a sitcom compared to this one.
From Alfred Hitchcock to Tobe Hooper, from Ed Kemper to Jeffrey Dahmer, Gein inspired a lot of people either in movies, or real life. While bluntly, artlessly realized, the argument that “Monster” makes is clear: These iconic horror movies, as well as the culture they helped create, connect back to Ed Gein.
Now, putting aside all the production and artistic issues with the show that make a horrific story too convoluted to watch or understand, Hunnman delivers one of his best performances that deserves, at least, an emmy nomination.
However, looking back at the eight episodes, one thing is clear. Netflix needs to shut this down. If you’re trying to humanize a serial killer, and make his issues the fault of everyone around him, you’re doing it wrong. Yes, Gein has mental issues that resulted in his crime spree, but that doesn’t mean that it’s everyone’s fault except his.
Ryan Murphy needs to re-examin his values in the fourth season. Apparently, a new monster is already coming.
Should you watch it?
While the show strives to tell this monster’s story, it fails to deliver eight episodes worthy of a binge watch. Fantastic performances are diluted with exaggerated B-stories that go nowhere at a slow pace.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream Monster: The Ed Gein Story exclusively on Netflix everywhere.
