Season four of FX’s The Bear left me with mixed feelings. I want to love it as much as the previous ones, but something is just off.
While there’s still plenty of self-indulgence, the show has clearly pared itself down, trying to focus on what works. Folks navigating a new kitchen and making a new restaurant works. While putting aside family drama and the traumas that made the show what it is.
The Bear’s evolution suggests a creative team that has simply lost its spark. Last season forced the expansion of the universe in a messy way.
This season, the creative team tried to trim the fat back, but they couldn’t just commit to it. Did we really need that cameo in the last two episodes? Not at all. Did it affect anything? Also no. Unless Jeremy Allen White is planning to exist the show and we don’t know yet, Christopher Storer and the creative team need to rethink their strategies here.
Season four starts slow. VERY slow. Like halfway throught the season, we’re still…starting. But when it finally picks up, we’re back to the glorious television we were promised.
However, because the show lit such an extraordinary flame from the start, its longevity was always going to be limited, and the sooner the creators accept it, the better. Time to end it with a masterful fifth season (show is already renewed) please and thank you.
Should You Watch It?
The Bear is clearly tired. Still good, but it’s not aging as well as fine wine.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream The Bear exclusively on Hulu in USA and on Disney+ everywhere else.
