Marty Supreme is definitely well made. However, is it worthy the Oscar buzz it got? Not really to be honest.
Starring Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, Marty Supreme is just a hell of a ride. It is breathlessly paced, and sometimes frightening.
While it’s definitely infused with some dark comedy, the film about Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, doesn’t really take its audience on the journey it promises.
Yes, Mauser goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness, but as a viewer, I didn’t feel any of those emotions. It felt like watching an okay cable tv drama with “story of the week”.
To be honest, Chalamet wore me out with his relentlessness. His “no one understands me” interpretation felt more fidgety than anything else. Yes, the table tennis games scenes we good. But they also felt like a last-minute addition to tie in Mauser’s story and jumping from one location to another. The film could have changed it to any kind of sports, or hobby, and the outcome would have been the same.
All in all, if you are looking for pure visual style, there is something here for you. But as a cohesive narrative, the film spins out of control long before the final match.
Should You Watch It?
For a film heavily promoted around table tennis, there isn’t much there about the game, or its characters, to keep me interested. They should learn a lesson from Challengers.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Marty Supreme on Prime Video.
