Ferrari is an inconsistent film with a weirdly slow start before finally catching enough speed to barely cross the finish line.
Starring Adam Driver, Shailene Woodley and Penélope Cruz, Ferrari is supposed to be a dramatic retelling of a difficult time for Enzo Ferrari where he almost lost his company at the same time as his marriage.
Instead of a drama film about his personal life, or a dramatic retelling about his professional life, we get a bland mix of that is more boring than a broken sports car. Michael Mann’s movie neglects the creativity and bravura in the racing that any good racing movie should have and substitutes stereotypical housewife and mistress roles for the film’s two women.
Don’t get me wrong. Mann’s film is not a car crash by any means, but the rousing romp it could have been has ended up more of a minor ‘inchident’ within the grand history of the automaker legacy.
As an audience, we crave a connection. Yet, in this film, we’re left without a clear understanding of Enzo Ferrari’s character or the motivations behind his relentless pursuit of success. This portrayal clashes with the movie’s attempt to highlight his personal struggles and their impact on his professional aspirations.
Should You Watch It?
A mixed bag. It’s a smarter than average biopic with decent acting that still feels incomplete. Not enough personal background and barely one good racing scene. Which was the infamous 1957 racing disaster.
Where Can I Watch It?
