Film Review: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare [2024] – Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare [2024] - Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a refreshing take on Guy Ritchie projects and Henry Cavill’s image. Who knew that Cavill could play a great deranged service member?

This film never takes itself too seriously, which is likely its main appeal. It’s filled with colourful characters, each with unique quirks and traits that leave a lasting impression.

Let’s get one thing straight. Henry Cavill is the star here, with impressive support and performance from Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer & everyone else. However, if it wasn’t for an impressive deranged and totally out of it performance by Cavill, the movie might have suffered heavily for Ritchie’s standard tropes. There are times, with its international cast, over-the-top set-pieces and quirky humour, when it feels more like a war-time version of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou than The Dirty Dozen, but the ensemble ensures it’s never less than entertaining.

I wasn’t bored, but I can’t say I was thrilled by it, either. It came and went, and did its job with professionalism. That’s about all I can ask for from a film like this. However, the two sexy muscled killing machines Cavill and Ritchson & their fighting scenes will live in my head, rent free, for a good amount of time.
