Thunderbolts* works! It’s actually really good, and I’m as surprised as everyone else.
Starring our favorite misfits, and introducing Lewis Pullman as Bob/Sentry, Thunderbolts manages few MCU movies have done. Taking a group of misfits or second rated characters, played by amazing characters, and getting us to care about them.
Focusing on Yelena’s trauma, played by Florence Pugh, director Jake Schreier instantly grounds the crazy last couple of years of the MCU is personal stakes. She’s depressed, with no goal. Throughout the movie, she gets a new purpose, and grows into her own shoes as a superhero. This is basically the theme of the movie.
Thunderbolts* takes the introduction of MCU’s superman down into a story of personal development, mental health, friendship, and chosen family. Everyone has a trauma, it’s about how you use it to better yourself, and everyone around you.
To be honest, I’m surprised that the MCU went there. With a runtime of over two hours, it felt like a breeze. I didn’t want to leave Yelena, Red Guardian, Bucky, Bob and the rest.
Yes, the stakes aren’t what we got used to since Endgame, and that’s a godo thing. Not everything needs to be “end of the world”. We need personal stories, we need to care about those hereos, especially with the upcoming Avengers movies.
In addition, stay alllllll the way to the end of the credits. You’re welcome!
Should you watch it?
If you missed good MCU movies similar to the first three phases, this one is for you. Just don’t expect a big CGI batter in the third act. This is the MCU at its best when it’s grounded in personal stories, and Bob. Lewis Pullman is perfect casting!
Where can I watch it?
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters.
