Citadel addresses a lot of its flaws in season two, but it also creates new ones. This franchise still doesn’t know what it wants to be.
Shifting the focus off Richard Madden & Priyanka Chopra Jonas into an ensemble cast was certainly the right move for the second season. They honestly dragged down the first one.
However, the show changed from being an expensive yet depressing Mr & Mrs Smith, into a clearly tighter budget John Wick mixed with Kingsman. Can we please find an identity?
With larger and more coherent action, better lighting, and Stanley Tucci anchoring the series, Citadel Season 2 brings some life into the franchise. While I didn’t get the same bad taste as its first outing, it wasn’t all cake and candies.
The story feels like written by a hallucinating AI with basic training material. Tucci does his best being the glue between the old show and the new one, but even he can’t make any of this remotely great. Yes, I called it show, not season, because it feels like a new one. Something happened between the two seasons, because it’s mostly a new cast, with new vibe and story, that barely depends on what happened last time, while also repeating some of its exact beats.
Amazon needs to just give up on this IP.
Should you watch it?
You will not remember anything about the show’s second season after you’re done watching it, but at least you’ll be entertained. Which is a step up compared to its first season.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream Citadel exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
