Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer makes you rethink lots of things. From Criminal Minds to #MeToo. Loved every second.
Dr. Ann Burgess might be one of the most underrated personalities in all North America. Her work is essential to most of the advances in psychology, studies of serial killers, as well as developing the whole Behavioral Science Unit in the FBI.
For anyone who liked Mindhunter (RIP), this series centers around Ann Burgess, the real-life inspiration for the character Wendy. In addition, Burgess work is clearly the inspirate for CBS/ABC’s Criminal Minds.
In addition to highlighting her scientific contributions, the documentary effectively highlights how she transformed law enforcement’s approach to rape victims and serial killers. By blending real-life footage and recordings from actual serial killers and victims, the show achieves a delicate balance.
Sounds familiar? After watching this three-episode docuseries, I’m confident in saying that this woman deserves all the medals. Burgess is a hypnotic person to listen to. Throughout the whole series, including archival footage, she kept her Julie Andrews demeanor contrasting with the grotesquely violent crimes in which she has spent her whole life immersed.
Should You Watch It?
It’s truly inspiring to witness individuals who defy the norm, achieve greatness, and remain humble. The production is excellently crafted, seamlessly shifting between the profound impact on Ann’s personal life and the horrors she encounters in her work.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer exclusively on Hulu in USA and on Disney+ everywhere else.
