The Sticky takes a blackly comic tone that makes it fun and messy. But it’s sweet, warm and nowhere near as violent as I wished.
Starring the one and only Margo Martindale with Chris Diamantopoulos & Guillaume Cyr, the show is very very loosely inspired by Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. A true story where some folks stole C$18.7 million in maple syrup.
Breezy, fun and entirely insane, this is a wild and wacky ride you will eagerly slurp up. Creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro have taken the elements of this true story and compacted them into a generally entertaining small town comedy, if an unusually angry one, which sits firmly on the side of the individual against the organization. Breezy, fun and entirely insane, some scenes felt out of this world in a very sarcastic way.
To be honest, I love Martindale in almost everything. She makes me laugh without even trying. And she sets that tone for the whole season. The story takes more twists and turns than a mountain road, taking the audience on a ride full of errors. The show largely leans into the absurdity and anarchic spirit of the unlikely ensemble despite moments of violence and the cold-hearted bureaucracy.
Call me selfish, I had fun, but I wanted more violence.
