Sonic the Hedgehog 3 [2024] - Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Keanu Reeves

With Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount and Sega keep finding new ways to up the risk, introduce new characters, and make it even more fun. It’s like the games are finally becoming real characters. Disney better learn.

After the second movie, and the offshoot series spin-off, I wasn’t sure how director Jeff Fowler can make a successful sequel. I was wrong. The action scenes are incredible, with a distinct anime influence that makes great use of a giant screen.

The film is a high-octane, unapologetically goofy romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Sonic 3 took a lot of risks. Some paid off, some didn’t.

First, let’s start with Jim Carrey’s double duty as Ivo Robotnik, aka Dr. Eggman, and his grayer, more beer-bellied grandpa. That risk definitely added a twist to the story. Twice the opportunity for Carrey to improvise jokes and play the movie for the silly spectacle that it is. Loved every single minute of it…in the beginning. By the end, I just wanted it to stop. Don’t get me wrong. Jim Carrey is definitely having the time of his life as Robotnik, and I’m loving watching it.

Love the silliness and campiness, wasn’t a fan of the monotone jokes by the end. Robotnik’s grandpa is definitely gay.

However, fun things aside, the franchise overlords are definitely paying attention to character development, even when the characters are personified balls of blue fur. This has definitely paid off for this sequel. No spoilers!
