After introducing us to the multiverse with Loki, Marvel Studios’ What If…? sets to familiarize the viewers with alternate versions of our favorite superheroes, as well as villains.
After breaking the multiverse, multiple times, Marvel Studio’s finally introduce us to The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), a multiversal being who swore an oath to watch the stories of the universes and never intervene. In this first season, we get to explore a different version of the movies from Marvel Studios’ first three phases.
What If Peggy took the super serum instead of Steve? T’Challa was the one kidnapped instead of Peter Quill? What if Thor is an only child? What if Ultron got his wish? And multiple other pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head.
What If…? may not add much to the larger MCU narrative, but surprising takes on beloved characters and some of the best action sequences in the entire franchise make for engaging viewing, as well as an insider look on what we can expect moving forward for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
In addition, the show sets in stone some of the rules of the multiverse, like what LOKI did. Dr Strange discovers “an absolute point in time” and we get to see it in action, multiple times. In every universe, Tony Stark must die for the superheroes team to assemble.
What i really liked about the show, aside from the storytelling, was the style of animation. You can see the pages of a comic-book brought to life. It’s truly a unique touch that goes a long way with regards to hooking the viewer in.
Should you watch it?
The series’ roughly 30-minute episodes feel epic enough that they could influence future MCU stories. You get a quick dose of MCU with an alternative story from each of the first 3 phases of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe movies, including The Incredible Hulk.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream season one of Marvel Studios’ What If…? exclusively on Disney+ everywhere.
