The final season of What If poses the question: What if Marvel never pivoted away from Kang. Would this season be better?
This final season is weird. While the first season was about explaining the multiverse all the way to saving it with Guardians of The Multiverse, and the second was about establishing Captain Carter as a central figure and linking back to Loki, this season throws all of that in the can in favor of a new plot that feels disjointed from the rest of the MCU.
Even when we were just jumping around in the second season, it felt cohesive. However, this is not the case in this final outing. Did I love the weird episodes for the newer MCU characters? Yes. Who doesn’t love a musical with Agatha and Kingo? Or finally seeing a good story about a Spider-Man villain being handled correctly without Spider-Man? Do I care about Riri Williams? Not really. Did I enjoy the episode? Heck yes.
But I all of that, in addition to Darcy laying an egg, didn’t prepare anyone for the final two episodes. While we got the background for Birdie, Storm shows up out of nowhere without any explanation. Might be the reason behind having 8 episodes instead of the regular 9, or the fact that we just watched a storyline for her in X-Men97. Regardless of the reason, it was weird.
In addition to this, the Watcher is suddenly in trouble. While he was doing his job in the first two seasons, he suddenly now has bosses that think he’s bad at it? Seriously? Where did that come from? Why did we ditch the connection to Loki that never showed up here?
All in all, I’m happy we got to see Shang-Chi, Agatha, Kate Bishop, Kingo and Riri in Animation before the show ended on what I hope it’s one of the last Marvel missteps.
Should You Watch It?
Lower your expections and enjoy the weird episodes. The finale doesn’t make much sense unless Marvel plans to fully pretend like it didn’t exist. Similar to Secret Invasion, the show feels rushed and redone without a satisfying conclusion. Great animation, not so great storylines.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream all three seasons of Marvel Studios’ What If…? exclusively on Disney+ everywhere.
