The final season of The Boys delivers one of the most “out there” stories that also feels very contemporary. It just needed to be a bit more focused.
After a boring fourth season, I was happy to see the show wrap up on a high note. However, it’s definitely not perfect.
Season five delivers the same show you fell in love with, but it isn’t sure how to please fans that have divided since Season 4. While it attempts some possible unity, it ends up sacrificing its tone and penchant for doing the audacious and unexpected.
Was the ending predictable? Definitely. Did it need 8 episodes? Not at all. Half of this final season felt like a filler and setup for the new prequel spin-off and had no real reason to be part of the main story. I hate when the producers force the creatives to stuff extra plots and side quests just to setup spinoffs that might be a huge failure. Remember Gen V? Well, they’re back, in addition to having over 30% of this season setting up an already announced prequel. Can we just go on and try to kill Homelander? I don’t need to spend half a season learning new things that don’t affect the main reason of the season.
Let’s be honest, sticking an ending is never easy. Especially for a popular show. Nevertheless, The Boys ends about as well as it possibly can and arguably trumps its source material’s conclusion.
Should you watch it?
The show’s fifth and final season has a familiar structure… But it stays strong even when it goes off the rails.
