Pixar’s Dream Productions is unquestionably cute. But there’s a weird feeling that it was very rushed as a TV show.
Before I take a deep dive on what I really thought about this Inside Out 2 Spinoff, let’s get one thing straight. The animation is what we have come to expect from Pixar and the world of Inside Out, with bold, bright colors and sharp details.
However, watching this limited 4 episodes series, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Yes, I loved it, but it was just all off.
We’re in the Inside Out universe; however, it’s missing what makes that world special: the visual representation of emotions, puberty, and the psychology behind it explained through the lens of the animators.
Instead of going deep, Dream Productions felt like a mocumentary on Hollywood engineered by Pixar animators, set on a lot very similar to Paramount Studios.
What we ended up with was a very cute and fun cash grab from Disney to sell more toys. It feels like a deleted scene from the movie, forced into a 2h limited series with some new stars (Hi Maya Rudolph <3)
If Dream Productions were to stick to its guns as a workplace sitcom, it would have been a welcome addition to the franchise, but it ties itself in knots trying to prove itself worthy of being part of it.
Did I enjoy it? Yes. Am I excited for more? Not really.
Should You Watch It?
Pixar’s Dream Productions is a very inventive twist on the Inside Out formula, though it does somewhat suffer from feeling a bit rushed for a TV show.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream all three seasons of Marvel Studios’ What If…? exclusively on Disney+ everywhere.
