Season two of Shrinking is great, not perfect. The humor is sharper this time; the emotion lands harder, but it’s somehow imbalanced.
After a stellar and perfect first season, the second season tries to deliver on the promise, but the show all but abandons Its premise for a shapeless hangout. I am much more complicated endorsing this season.
Did I enjoy it? Yes. Did I laugh and cry? Definitely. However, the whole season felt like something was off.
Two episodes longer than it’s predecessor, we get more comfortable with our favorite characters. Season One had just the right ratio of unease to idiosyncrasy. The second season holds that mix, but the writing’s focus has empowered the supporting cast. Instead of watching our cast get their own dose of therapy and change their lives, in a coherent way, the season is all over the place.
Yes, our cast has a LOT of chemistery. But platonic chemistry alone can’t provide enough glue to cobble these mismatched parts together. Too many storylines forced to co-exist, sometimes in the same 5 minutes, without actually giving them enough time to breath. As much as I loved watching Jason Segel’s character process his grief, I was honestly there just for Harrison Ford’s comments and acting.
If it wasn’t for Ford, I wouldn’t have finished watching this season. Hopefully the procuders adress the concerns for the next season. I want to watch Shrinking, not a mix of Ted Lasso kumbaya shrink office.
Should you watch it?
Good, but not nearly as perfect as the first season. It works up to a point but to this gnarled old churl there’s still too much growing and learning going on. Ultimately, it’s just too easy not to care: Shrinking’s appeal, a season in, is indeed shrinking.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream both seasons of Shrinking exclusively on Apple TV+.
