Kraven the Hunter had a lot going against it. And if you remove the bloody action scenes, everyone was right to lower their expectations.
Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson with an impressive list of A-List cast, Kraven is Sony’s last attempt at forcing a Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man down our throats. Thankfully, this attempt is as weak as it’s last three. And I don’t blame the actors for it.
The movie begins with an impressive action sequence that showcases Kraven’s talents, while also sprinkling in some humor. Unfortunately, we switch straight into a boring hour-long flashback right after it. It’s a rollercoaster of ups and downs after that as the picture yo-yos between pitiful storytelling and okay acting. Even Russell Crowe finds it difficult to take this movie seriously. And he was Zeus in the last Thor.
And don’t get me started with the misuse of amazing characters in this movie. The list is probably the longest since Amazing Spider-Man 2: Calypso, The Foreigner, Rhino, etc. Watching the movie, it felt like the writers were given a challenge to figure out how many times then can get someone to say “Calypso” in one go…
Let’s be clear. If anyone paid to go watch the movie, it was to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his too many abs… And putting his abs aside, he is great in this movie’s action scenes, even the boring and over stretched monologues. But even a talented actor cannot save a movie with wafer-thin plot that’s painfully predictable.
Should You Watch It?
To close out its painfully bad universe. Sony decided to make a bad National Geographic documentary while mashing up the worse thing from Madame Web with the plot of Taken. You can skip this one.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Kraven the Hunter on all digital platforms.
